Now She Knows

Big eyes bright
Imagination overflowing
Such a innocent mind
Kittens, birds, flowers, barbies
She didn't know pain
She didn't know loss
Just a free being
Seeing things she shouldn't
Flames swooping over pipes
The sparkly white powder
And the regular powder
Leaves rolled in paper
Bottles and cans littered the floor
Peel the gold strip off the box for mom
Mama's friends coming and going
The told her "shhh, just touch it"
What is that?
Parents alcohol breathe bringing comfort
Sleeping outside was fun
Digging in the trash looking for a prize
Wandering around
"Where's my mama?"
Maybe she found food.
She didn't know
She did not know
Police stealing her mama
She hated them for that
"Don't tell anyone they'll take you away"
Scared to talk
So she meowed.
She found flowers
Watched the birds
Collected her Barbies
Mama's face bruised again
Screaming and fighting with her friends
Turning around, mama covered in blood
"He won't do it again, he promised"
Monsters. All of them.
Mama became one too
Lashing out in anger and attacking her
She started running away
And hiding in trees
Acorn tops make finger hats
She kept a knife under her pillow
Scared someone was coming
On edge at a young age
Imagination wild.
Kitten poster hung above her bed
SpongeBob on the t.v.
Chocolate milk in lap
She did not know.
So much happened
She didn't understand
It's all a blur now
Memories visiting randomly
But it's different now
Because now she knows.
She understands
She feels the pain
Now she knows...
