Siren's Song

poem by: Rhys Lee

She tuned me to the beat of her heart,
and she played me for the fool.

My ship swelled next to her
like the tides, rolling up the shore
and rolling down the sand, catching
sea stars, sea shells, and her eyes.

Her voice was beautiful, haunting,
tugging me further along the coast,
searching for the allure of beauty
in the flesh singing my song.

I hunted till I became weary, and when
sleep threatened I stabbed myself
to keep myself awake, and I bled
myself dry to keep her next to me,

crying like Orpheus when she wasn’t
near, breaking the hearts of the gods
in the sky to let me pass into hell
to find this haunting, hailing voice.

I came close, like Icarus to the sun,
turned my vessel into a secluded cove,
following the currents which seemed to
pull directly to her, the most beautiful creature.

Then my ship ran aground, splintering
into thousands of bits, impaling me,
and she came aboard with sharpened claws
and teeth and tore out my throat.

And I knew I wouldn’t find the beat
of her heart, or the song to mine.
