A St. Kitts and Nevis Independence Day Poem

It’s Independence Day and I have something to say,
We are proud of our history and proud of this special day!
Liamuiga (which means fertile land) was the original name,
From the Amerindians that were here before Columbus came.
“This land is called Saint Christopher,” he soon proclaimed,
“I claim this land for the Queen of Spain.”
Then the English came Led by Sir Thomas Warner,
And then the French came, they all lived together.
The native Caribs, that were living here,
Loss and bled, the Point is still there.
For the Sugar Plantations our ancestors came,
As African slaves To St. Kitts, and Nevis the same.
They toiled and toiled with only memories of their homeland,
Hoping for the day their descendants could be freemen.
The Spanish came to reclaim the lands,
and after years of fighting, we ended up in Britain’s hands.
As slavery was outlawed and our ancestors could now be free,
This Land is also Our Land must have been their decree.
As a British colony we yearned for full autonomy,
To be in control and decide our own destiny.
So on that faithful day in 1983,
These Lands became Our Lands, we were now totally free.
On September 19 we must celebrate,
this momentously special Independence Day date.
If only our ancestors were alive to see, they’ll be so proud of you and me,
Happy Independence Day to St. Kitts and Nevis, from me to you and you to me.
Happy Independence Day St. Kitts and Nevis, One Nation, One Destiny.
