A Poet's Tragedy (A Poem on Edgar Allan Poe)

poem by: Allison Green
Written on Apr 20, 2017

A sad happiness
A melancholy peace:
Unsettling knowledge

A dark man in a vibrant garden
A half smile underneath miserable eyes,
A fairy kingdom, and a lost love

A tear,
Unkempt hair

A pen and paper to keep insanity at bay
Writing all that he thinks and feels
A pen and paper to invite insanity

A flask to help forget
A flask that doesn't help
A poem to help remember

Sleepless nights
Battles in his mind
Retreating into dreams

A sea representing good memories
A raven to represent death
An inaccessible tomb

Scary stories at midnight
Trying not to scream
Failure

Oh Virginia
Oh how he loved
The loss of a beautiful woman

A fascinating poem and a wonderful summary of what I think is very true of this poet's life, so typical of men like him, composers, artists etc. excellent poem.
