Patience

Over time, you’ve become familiar,

Your presence is always welcome.

Those days you’re here kindle the friendly fire.

My heart opens, embracing its warmth.

Though there comes the days you’re gone.

That sends an icy breeze to stifle the flame.

Alone, I try to stoke the wood, ignite a spark.

The bitter chill of an empty night eats through me.

I wait for the flame to return again,

The last of the smoke floats away in the wind.

A blanket shrouding me, I wait for warmth.

I sleep not knowing if the fire will return.

When awake, I see you’ve come back.

The fire is high and bright in radiance.

The familiar warmth has returned to me.

When next you leave, I wait patiently,

Knowing you’ll always be back.
