DEAR DR. KING
by Nattalie Gordon

Dear Dr. King,
Thought you'd like to know how we been since 1968
Your last day alive is a day we both mourn and celebrate
But the sun's out, the sky's blue and the President's black
So we forge along with faces towards the sun and the wind to our backs.

On a real though the block got hot like summer
Hearts got cold like fall
Ain't no sunshine since you gone sir, no sunshine here at all.
They say better days coming, say its right 'round the bend
But days sure are passing fast, like the world can't wait to end.

Both races good friends now though, it's normal to see a mixed crowd
Hardly any segregation, even gays get to be out n' proud.
Just don't be getting lost in certain neighborhoods
Otherwise folks don't mess with you, keep your nose down and you good.

They say a white cop killed Mike Brown, I don't know 'cause I wasn't there
All I know is dude got killed, people screaming shit aint fair.
But don't you dare feel sad 'cause things really ain't all bad
You made it possible for me to have opportunities you never had
Even though the crime rates kinda high I hope it won't stay that way
Strange fruit don't hang no different than it did back in your day.

I have a dream, that one day we will honor your dream
We fight but we don't march, freedom ain't as real as it seem.
Now you what's up since your fight for our civil rights
Thanks a lot by the way, on behalf of both blacks and whites
I know you resting good now, being up in heaven and all
Could you tell God to check his phone, though? He'll probably see my missed call.

Christopher Russon commented:
I really like your poem. Just keep calling and you will be surprised He may just pick up the phone.
Michael Wise commented:
Kind of a bittersweet reading. Nicely expressed. And God IS listening.
