FLAMEPROOF by Serge de Moliere

Wild wheat
turns in the willful sun
roasting.
Crackling, the wind
sears the seeds, blows
them into kindling.
Now the field’s afire.

Two former lovers, now
married, picnic in the grass.
All around them, burning,

Their coldness is a firewall.
