Silent Letters

Why use a silent letter, in a certain word, 
Does it make it better, they're really quite absurd?
We're taught in class the language rule, which followed through to college,
Why have a letter 'H' in SCHOOL and a 'K' in KNOWLEDGE?

And then there's 'D' in HANDHERCHIEF, it's pointless to the core,
'T' in MORTGAGE beyond belief, with 'N' in HYMN and more,
And why no 'E' in GUITAR, why would they leave that at out?
Have I made you think so far and why the 'B' in DOUBT?

In FOREIGN,'G' it's plain to see, it should not remain,
In SIGH a 'G,' instead of 'Y' and why the 'G' in REIGN?
More confusing is the 'K,' the KNACK, we KNEAD to KNOW,
May sound correct, but not that way, I know ,you knew that though!

PSYCHOLOGY with it's silent 'P' and every other "PSY,"
And CHAOS sounds of 'K' to me, I'll leave you to ask why?
That silent letters don't do much, they really have no clout,
It's like the word needs a crutch, why don't they leave them out?
