The Slow Capture

poem by: Susanna Fitzpatrick
Written on Jul 25, 2026

Written in 1996 and published in The California City Post.

I see your every move
Your slow creeping
Your nearness
Approaching subtly.

I see the net you weave
With eagerness
With innocent-sounding
Flattering speech.

I see the cage,
The lock, the lure
But spellbound
I cannot run.

You seek to capture
Not only my body,
Not my mind
Nor possessions I own.

Slowly, deftly,
You know you will win
The capture of
My very heart.
