Connecticut: Tragedy and Hope

As my coworker told me the news, I almost keeled over in sorrow and agony. On Friday, 12/14, a gunman killed 26 children and adults at an elementary school. The defenseless children and adults were probably killed "executioner" style; they were probably killed one by one, which makes the crime even more demented.

This was one of the worst tragedies our nation has ever experienced. All human life is sacred, but there is something that tugs extra hard at out heart strings when children suffer. I am just a mere man like everyone involved in the crime, but for what it is worth, I offer my prayers and support. I did not know any of the victims or their families, but as a fellow human being, I mourn for those who were senselessly killed.

So you may be wondering why I titled this blog "Tragedy and Hope?" Well, in the midst of such tragedies, we Christians can be reminded of the peace and hope that is soon to come. I cannot help but long for the end when God comes to annihilate all of the wickedness and evil in our world and establish peace and justice forever. The prophet Isaiah longed for the day when men will beat their swords into plowshares: 

"He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore." Isaiah 2:4

The Apostle John also alluded to God's eschatological plan when he said:

"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:4

When terrible tragedies like September 11th, the Columbine shooting, or even the Connecticut shooting occur, we Christians should mourn, but we should also remember that God is going to come and make things right one day, and all of our current sufferings will forever be vanquished. But still, it can be difficult to stand strong when heart-wrenching stuff like this happens. With all  creation, I eagerly wait for the Blessed Hope: that beautiful day when the sky will be rent in two and our Savior will appear. To quote the apostle John once more, "Amen. Come, Lord Jesus."

Please pray for the victims' families and friends. This is going to be a tough Christmas for them.
