For Barbara Windsor

poem by: Ann Parks
Written on Dec 11, 2020

I haven't been pondrin here
for maybe a year
looking at my poems
some full of sadness
some full of cheer
then suddenly in the screen corner
a message popped up:
we have lost dear Barbara!
Barbara, Barbara
beautiful clever funny too
the highest pass mark in London
was given to you
you went to my school
for a brief while
then stage school
then bright lights
and carry ons
from you to us
with love and joy.
I cried when I saw your
"who do you think you are"
related to Constable
but you were an artist too.
Your mind was dimmed
tragically you faded
yet your beloved stayed
and adored you still.
My working class angel
my Stamford Hill hero
I ache at your passing
but rejoice you were here!

Barbara Windsor passed the 11 plus exam with the highest mark of any London child.
