Between Heaven and Earth

poem by: Martyn Richardson

Come to me, I’m sure is what the voice said.
Sit here and rest your tired and weary head.
I can see that your life has taken its toll
It has broken your heart and crushed your soul.

So maybe now it is time for you to rest
You gave them all your absolute best
So sit and rest for just a short while
You may get back up, but you’ve lost your smile.

I can see that you, you will try to go on
But what can you give when everything has gone
You have been strong for so very long
But today you sing such a different song.

The challenges you faced they have been relentless
It has taken too much leaving internal emptiness
It hurts me to see the strong crumble and break
When from you, everything so many will take.

You openly gave your love without any conditions
But those you gave it to were on different missions
They bled from you all that you had
Then without a care, they left you hurt and sad.

I have watched you suffer as I have watched your life
I know that your pain cuts deep like a knife
Your life had a beginning, and so it shall have an end
When you’re completely broken, you can no longer mend

So come to me and sit for a short while
You don’t have to go back, you were not on trial
And if you decide you want to stay
There is a place for you here, I will never turn you away.

And then I heard my own voice quietly say
I really wish that that with you, I could stay
But my life needs more, and I am not yet done
I have two young children, a daughter and a son

They are not yet ready to be without me
So I must go back, I’m sure you will agree
My love for them grows every single day
So the cost is on me and I’ll continue to pay

But eventually, I know that to you, I’ll return
That is one thing in time we all learn
And when I come back, I know I will say
This time I’m here, and I’m ready to stay

For so many years I have protected this prize. I have tried so hard not to let it become damaged. As years went by some of those I have trusted. Were not so careful of the this thing I treasured. I finally found you, and as we... Read more
