This Man Is An Island

poem by: Michael Wise
Written on May 12, 2018

This man is an island
uncharted in the sea
and many are the shipwrecks
that set their sails for me

Down along the shoreline
are remnants in decay
and others sank beneath the waves
while searching for a quay

Peaceful waters beckon
lonely sailors to their doom
the jagged rocks below
mark an ocean vessel's tomb

Few have made it inland
few can ever reach
The crashing waves have washed away
their footprints from the beach

I set sail to nowhere
no seaways do I brave
Another island's rocky shore
shall never be my grave

Far removed from those
who would venture out to me
for this man is an island
in the middle of the sea

People tend to avoid the eye of the storm. And once you're there it's hard to leave. Nice poem.

Yes Frank, there was sadness there when I wrote it, to a degree there still is. But there's also a strange peacefulness as well.
