To a Departed Friend

poem by: Michael Wise
Written on Apr 23, 2018

Have I taken the best of what you had
and made it all my own?
Did your sweet life touch mine in vain?
 Or have I truly grown?

Your heart still beats within my mind
 although you've gone to sleep
 I gaze upon your photograph
 and I begin to weep

I'd like to think I'm better now
than when our paths first crossed
that through your love and tenderness
the worst of me was lost

The lives of many have been touched
 because you happened by
far too many make no mark
 so great before they die

But you did that and so much more
 and I am greatly blessed
I hope to pass your love around
 before I'm laid to rest

You took a part of me with you
 upon your death, you see
but I kept part of you as well
 the best inside of me

And so my friend I'll do my part
 and I shall surely try
 to honor your sweet memory
 so others will know why

the goodness that they see from me
 was planted there by you
and I in turn shall pass it on
for you would want me to

Forever I will love you so
 that flame shall never die
You left so soon, I wish we had
 a chance to say goodbye

But we will meet again my friend
 and then you'll surely see
 the many that were harvested
from seeds you've sewn in me.

Love the words to this poem. I also believe we will see our family and friends again.
