Comic Redemption
Once when that black ice cloud returned again
Penetrating by mind and heart freezing all aspiration
Taking me below resentment fear or pain
To a hopeless state of dull weary enervation
On the radio, I heard a voice that transformed my demeanour
Max Miller, fabled comedian in stand up routine performing
His art, vitality and zest became my spirit's redeemer
Irreverent, unfettered he achieved a mind's reforming
The fog of despondence was dispersed and I once more saw light
And I hugged myself for joy, shared laughter and life restored
Though my problems might still exist, somehow it was alright
I could face them and they didn't have me floored
His energy emanated as from divine creative spark
Though his genius was not what we normally consider as art
It's effect on me was as great as by Mozart or Bach
In raising my spirits and inspiring me to once more take part
So a blessing on those with talent to give us mirth
This holy, unholy ability to reveal life's balance and shatter
The belief that all is significant, solemn and equal worth
And to recognise that sometimes it really doesn't matter
Therefore let lightness and joviality infect our space
Spreading from Jupiter to dark Pluto and Angry Mars
So that even God that old curmudgeon will crack his face
And laughter will echo round the stars
