Meaningful Relationship

poem by:
Written on Aug 02, 2016

As children, it does seem, we are never taught how to feel,
Feelings collide together, as they woefully start to congeal.
Emotions become repressed, as they remain yet untapped,
Learning self forgiveness is like a present being unwrapped.

We are taught to search for happiness, outside but not within,
Believed to be the product of evil, seeking forgiveness from all sin.
Seeking those who can fix our lives, providing just what we need,
Too late now, confidence is destroyed, time for our souls to bleed.

We are taught that love is an outside force, separate from our soul,
Never learning just how to cope, or how to set an emotional goal.
Desperately searching for the way, the truth, and meaning to our life,
Leaning constantly on others, depending always on a husband or wife.

Allow me to persuade you, on this very day, and to you I will make this clear,
Happiness is found within yourself, so find someone else with whom you can share.
No one else can help you, to obtain happiness, it is a lie that has long been told,
This beautiful life, when shared between people, is the secret for love to unfold.

We can be surrounded by material things, but, if there is no one to share them with, then life is meaningless... well written.
commented:
Thanks Cecilia. That's exactly what I was aiming for: sharing the joys of life WITH others vs. obtaining happiness FROM others.
Lewis Smith commented:
People get so caught up in media and the rest of the world that they often forget about what matters most, great work

Thanks Lewis.

Beautiful and true, my youth has been poisoned by my mothers antics: " Make sure you'll be not left on the shelf!"
commented:
Thanks Shanta.
Geoffrey Brewer commented:
Your sharing of poems here is a manifestion of the message in this poem. Always interesting.
commented:
Thanks Geoffrey. Trying my best to internalize this. I know the words are true, but sometimes our heart and mind contradict each other. Patience isn't just a virtue, sometimes it is a necessity.
Martyn Grindrod commented:
You've got to love yourself to love another .Nicely done .
Maria Williams commented:
We are the only ones who can discover the opportunities of Love and Happiness but we must be able to love ourselves first. I've tried to convey this in my poem Elly May You've conveyed this beautifully
