Small Town America

poem by: Charles Sperry
Written on Dec 17, 2022

Americans under a stop sign
Between ages eighty and three
Chat laughing about beer and peach wine
(The youngest is staring at me)

Americans walking the town square
The courthouse looks solemnly on
The children who sing in the street fair
For pioneer fathers long gone.

Americans under a flagpole
Saluting the land of the free
And though I am estranged and adopted
They've made room in America for me.
