Modern Contemplation

poem by: Charles Sperry

Electrons on my blinding blue light page
Flit endlessly- to exert my will
Exemplary of this ephemeral age
Of permanence of the intangible.

My heartstrings must reflect another's words
The endless fun house mirror my medium
And through eternal scrolling of the boards
Becomes a whole of vapid tedium.

How can I live up to the likes of the
Great heroes who have lived scant years before
When nightingales corrupt, and drown out Thee
With tweeting songs from Dante's fifth and fourth?

Oh God to whom our altars now lay bare
In this dark age of our enlightenment
Grant me a word, a song which I may bear
To sing and shore my spirit's fundament.
