The Beach

poem by: John Pegg

I will never walk this beach again,
The silver sand, damp beneath my feet.
The sun like burnished gold overhead.
The hills shimmer, sun-drenched in the midday heat.
The sea, a flat mirror reflecting the summer sky
Which conceal beneath it surface waters dark and deep.
Whilst above the waves gently foam and churn,
To slowly lap the shore in nature's slow heartbeat.
There on the sky blue, sea blue horizon,
Lie the tiny, bobbing boats of the local fishing fleet.
And the hills, scrubby and pine clad,
Strewn with boulders and rocks like broken teeth.
The cry of the seagulls and the scent of pine and sea
Drench my senses, into my soul it creeps.
I will never walk this beach again,
But know in memories and future dreams
This sand I'll walk, and you my love,
Unchanged, in pleasure greet.
