What Christmas means to me

poem by: Steven Godfrey
Written on Dec 09, 2016

I will never forget as a kid , the excitement on Christmas Eve
"Santa won't arrive " mum said unless you truly believe
Sent to bed early , out the window I would gaze
Looking for the brightest star , hoping the snow would stay for days

Awake at an early hour , to see what Santa has dropped off
Ripping off the paper , " what a mess "I hear mum scoff
A time for kids , and for families coming together
I always hoped these feelings would last forever and ever

Outside to play with all our friends comparing what toys we had
Forgetting the real meaning of Christmas, still to young to feel bad
Back inside for Christmas dinner , don't forget the sprouts
You couldn't hear yourself at times , with all the joyful shouts

As we grow older , Christmas changes year on year
The Christmas spirit is still inside us,just not the same old cheer
Families drift apart , memories are there where loved ones used to be
Thinking of the good times, is what Christmas means to me .

Love this poem Steven....I loved Christmas time, purely for the shear noise, and excitement of my two young daughters.....I thought they were going to explode! as they ripped open each present.......oh I wish we could make them young again.....thanks for sharing that beautiful poem....
