Winners and Losers

poem by: Cecilia Crasto
Written on Jul 01, 2016

We live our lives the way we choose
We take the risks to win or lose
Life is a game just a crazy game
They change the rules but it's all the same.

Some have ambition, others have none
Life's chances are given to everyone
If a loser tries hard he can succeed
He must light the fire to ignite the greed.

It's the nature of man in his discontent
To strive for more till his life is spent
The world dictates that he must succeed
To amass much more than he'll ever need.

Princes and paupers, they're all the same
What matters is how they play the game
Fame and fortune don't mean a thing
If the heart feels no joy in Spring.

We all must die the way we came
No claims to riches no pretenses to fame
What a man owns is what will divide
Murmurs of dissent begin at the graveside!

Great Poem Cecilia! Completely agree with your content; well stated and to the point. Mankind searches for meaning until it is too late to realize the importance of precious non-material connections.

Crikey! For a moment I thought I was reading one of mine!!!! I got it's rhythm right away and the poem tripped off my tongue. Cheers
Geoffrey Brewer commented:
A well constructed poem with form, rhyme and rhythm. I think you have well identified the 'game' aspect of life; so is there anything wrong with winning as long as we follow fair rules of the game; and is there anything wrong with prosperity that we create (not steal)? Must we feel guilty for succeeding and flourishing?

Very nice, and so true.
Cecilia Crasto commented:
Thank you Geoffrey, you pose some interesting questions, wish I had the answers. I have always thought that if we acquire wealth through hard work, it is a good thing but, we should share it with those less fortunate than us.
Cecilia Crasto commented:
Thank you Ann, very kind of you to say so.
Maria Williams commented:
We must all strive hard in this life to follow our dreams and passions, but I do think that one can get lost in the game and lose focus. As I remember my father always saying "the more you give, the more you get".What goes around comes around. Life is full of abundance.
Cecilia Crasto commented:
I totally agree Maria and I thank you for your insightful thoughts.

Powerful words of wisdom. It's okay to have riches as long as to life be true and you make the riches, don't let the riches make you.

Hi Cecilia, what a well written poem, thanks for sharing… Love your take on what we are all aware of but most battle on anyway… obviously there is a wisdom that you have drawn on from within. Your ending was so simple but profound… As one gets older and has learnt by mistakes and experiences, I have developed a philosophy that says “you can do anything you like in life as long as you haven’t achieved at anyone else’s expense” … Not everyone has the ability to turn their dreams into reality, I was fortunate to have that motivation, direction and confidence, I couldn’t have achieved those successes on my own so I made sure the ones that helped shared in my success… Was “greed a motivator?” not at all… Now in my 78th year have learnt heaps but I know this… Greed is a Destroyer… Sharing is a Panacea… Knowledge creates wisdom… Peace is The Key… (The Peace will come when you accept there are problems in the world that are unsolvable).
